Backyard Landscaping
Make It Your Favorite Place To Be

One of the primary areas people focus on for improvement is their backyard landscaping. The rear of the house is usually the place that sees the most outside activity. The landscaping of the backyard can range from simple foundation landscaping to elaborate outdoor living and entertaining areas. A combination of different elements can make for a great place for the family to live, play and entertain.
Some of the common elements used today to produce the perfect landscape are:
· Decks
· Patios
· Gazebos
· Outdoor kitchens
· Outdoor living areas
· Outdoor furniture
· Fire pits or outdoor fireplaces
· Swimming pools
· Play sets and play areas
· Sport courts
· Putting greens
· Gardens for flowers, vegetables and herbs
· Water features
· Screens to create privacy
· Structure to form outdoor rooms
· Retaining walls to level areas and make more useable room
· Outdoor lighting to provide illumination at night
· Outdoor electronics
· Art work and statues
A good landscaping design begins with defining how you want to use each area of your yard. A simple foundation landscaping with a yard may be all that is necessary if you are not the outdoor type or don’t need outdoor room for entertaining or relaxing. If you have children, a play area may be top priority. Don’t forget that the children’s' needs will change as they grow older. Make sure that any play areas can change as their needs and interests change.
For people who want room to relax and enjoy the outdoors or who want to have an outdoor entertaining area, the plans become much more intricate. Do you need a simple patio or a complete outdoor living/entertaining area with features such as a grilling area or outdoor kitchen? Do you want an outdoor sound system or television? A fire pit or even an outdoor fireplace for the cool evenings or winter use might be nice. Do you want to screen off the neighbors or do you need to create shade for those hot days?
When developing a plan for the landscape, make sure you clearly define your needs not only short term but long term. You don't have to do what your neighbor did. Make it your own, have what you want and need to make you enjoy your space. Having a long range plan can keep you from spending time and money on something that only has to be done over a couple of years down the road. Maybe you can’t have it all right now, but with a good plan, you can do the work in phases and you eventually will end up with your dream landscape.
